Coach Russell Pocaro
I started training jiu jitsu in 2015 with a goal of improving my health after living a fairly sedentary lifestyle in my twenties. During my first class I was actually doing jiu jitsu, albeit very poorly. I would fall in love with it because of how I felt after training and I thrived because I found a fantastic community at McHugh Jiu Jitsu.
One of the best things about jiu jitsu is that you're never done growing. It is as simple as grabbing a different training partner, trying something on your bad side, or intentionally working your way out of bad spots.
Throughout my life, I have found myself in teaching roles. In high school and college, I helped teach children's karate classes where I trained. As an adult, I mentored college students and trained new hires where I worked. For the past nine years, I've worked as a high school business teacher. Teaching is in my blood and being an instructor is just my way of giving back to a tribe that has given me so much in my jiu jitsu journey.
