Build your child's confidence, focus, and self-defense on the mat. Age-specific programs for ages 3 through the teen years — taught by coaches who genuinely love working with kids.

It's more than a martial art. It's a weekly habit that shapes how your child carries themselves — on and off the mat.
Kids learn to carry themselves with quiet confidence and to protect themselves without throwing a punch.
The structure of class — listen, drill, respect the coach and each other — carries straight into school and home.
BJJ gives kids the tools and the calm to handle conflict, so they're rarely a target in the first place.
Every class is active — strength, balance, and body awareness that beats a screen every time.
Kids train alongside teammates who become friends, learning to win humbly and lose gracefully.
A belt and stripe system gives kids clear, earned goals — and the pride of achieving them.
Every child trains with kids their own age and skill level. Find the right starting point below.

A playful first introduction to the mat — listening, coordination, and confidence through age-appropriate games and drills.

"We love McHugh BJJ!! My kids have been training here for years and it's been an incredible experience. The atmosphere is always welcoming, supportive, and motivating. The instructors do a fantastic job, balancing structure and technique while making classes fun and engaging. The values they instill — confidence, leadership, discipline, focus, courage, resilience, work ethic — have been just as impactful as learning the jiu jitsu."

My son has been training here for close to 4 years now and has grown into such a confident, focused, hard working student! We love that he has the non quitting spirit that McHugh instills in their students."

Yes. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most beginner-friendly martial arts because it focuses on technique and leverage rather than strength, making it accessible for all ages and fitness levels.
Two classes a week is a great starting point for most kids — it builds skill and routine without overloading their schedule. Children who fall in love with it often add a third day. Our kids' schedule offers multiple class times each week so it's easy to stay consistent.
Nothing to start. Comfortable athletic clothes are fine for a trial class, and McHugh Jiu Jitsu provides a loaner gi (uniform) if needed. Once your child joins, they'll want their own BJJ gi. Bring a water bottle and an open mind.
No — the opposite. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches control, respect, and self-discipline. Kids learn how to handle themselves calmly and defend against bullying without needing to strike. The confidence they build tends to reduce conflict, not create it.
